$h!t Folk Say

23 Jan

I was not thrilled with  Shit Black Girls Say, in fact I was quite bothered by it; probably because I couldn’t see myself in it. But Shit Bougie Black Girls Say actually made me chuckle. I’ve been called “bougie” on more than one occasion. I prefer the term “posh” thankyouverymuch. And I say “clearly” so much a former coworker uses my name as its hash tag.

Are these videos offensive, comedy, cultural criticism, inconsequential?  And would they be viewed differently if they were done by nonblacks?

Franchesca Ramsey has been called racist for her viral hit below. What do you think?

A psuedo-friend recently sent a ‘Shit White Girls Say…’ video via email to me. She’s a non-black and well versed in the black culture. I was torn after watching it. I found it slightly humorous, yet, offensive at the same time. If a black person sent it to me, I’d still find it offensive but a bit less.

I know I’m a hypocrite but that’s how I feel. I know it wasn’t her intent to make me feel some kind of way but it did. I don’t truly know her intent. Was it meant in a ‘I’ve heard this before’ or haha this is so stupid.

Cultural criticism – and I love it. I think I’ve watched every single one out there by now. Sure, they are offensive on some level, but humor of this sort tends to touch a nerve. I suppose that’s the intent.

Making people uncomfortable isn’t a crime and it it helps then question their actions/thoughts.
