There’s a man who I call when I need stuff fixed around my house; repairs that are beyond my limited scope. However, I am quite proud to report that I changed my own fluorescent light bulbs for the first time a week or so ago. And let me tell ya’ it was no easy feat. What did we do before YouTube tutorials?

But my handyman is a family friend who can do just about anything or so it seems — plumbing, painting, hanging windows, etc. His name is Mr. Wendel.  And he’s come to the aid of myself, my sister, and my aunt countless times.

This past Sunday Mr. Wendel fixed my garbage disposal (which saved me about $100), repaired my fan/light thingy above my stove, and mounted this stubborn coat hook rack that I’ve been attempting to hang for about two weeks now. When I tried to pay him as he left, he wouldn’t take my money. None of it. I insisted that he at least take cash for gas. He wouldn’t accept that either. I told Mr. Wendel that not charging clients for services rendered wasn’t a good business practice but he didn’t seem to care. He just said, “We’re good.”

I was surprised and baffled by this act of kindness. But it’s not like this was the first time Mr. Wendel’s been so kind.

It’s just that he doesn’t have to be.

And yet he is.
