Yep – Fuck 2016

15 Nov

Groundbreaking journalist Gwen Ifill lost her battle with cancer. May she rest in peace. Let’s add her to the list of those we’ve lost this year. The American people elected a piece-of-shit President. Congratulations white people, you did it! Close friends of the family are battling serious illnesses. I wish them well. And yeah I still miss Prince.

Here’s to hope for the better in 2017. Perhaps Trump will get impeached? Cross your fingers folks.

Check out this hilariously honest clip from this week’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

And if you haven’t watched the episode in its entirety, you can check it out here.

Issa Rae’s HBO show Insecure has been renewed for a second season; so that’s a bright spot. Find joy where you can.

ICYMI: Issa Rae’s Insecure on HBO

11 Oct

You can now view the first episode of Issa Rae’s new HBO show Insecure on YouTube. Woo hoo!  If you’ve watched Issa’s hit web series Awkward Black Girl, her new show will remind you of that (but in a good way). It’s funny but familiar. Apparently, many want Issa to continue down her awkward path, as she explained in a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon.  Typecasting strikes yet again.

I enjoyed the first episode. It’s good to see black women represented in complex, refreshing ways. And I’m glad she’s bringing issues that black women face to the forefront but with humor. The music is on point too, with Raphael Saadiq selecting the tracks of the show’s premier episode. You can listen to the songs on Spotify  but I also found the listing here if you’re not on Spotify (like myself).

Insecure airs on HBO, Sundays at 10:30pm (way beyond what should be my bedtime).

Looky here.

“The System is Broken”

29 Sep

12_lifetime_likelihood_raceICYMI last Sunday, HBO aired a Vice special report Fixing the System which examines the epidemic of mass incarceration currently slaughtering communities of color around the country. The special includes an interview with former US Attorney General Eric Holder who frankly states that “the system is broken.” It also includes an interview with President Barack Obama who hopes the country can curb over-incarceration for nonviolent drug offenses. President Obama also visits a federal prison and speaks with six inmates about their life experiences–in and out of prison. It’s the first time a sitting US President has ever visited a federal prison. And it’s about time. The US has the largest incarcerated population in the world. The Vice special focuses primarily on the mass incarceration of men of color; women aren’t explicitly included in the conversation but perhaps we’re there implicitly?

According to The Sentencing Project’s “Report of The Sentencing Project to the United Nations Human Rights Committee Regarding Racial Disparities in the United States Criminal Justice System” (2013):

Racial minorities are more likely than white Americans to be arrested; once arrested, they are more likely to be convicted; and once convicted, they are more likely to face stiff sentences. African-American males are six times more likely to be incarcerated than white males and 2.5 times more likely than Hispanic males. If current trends continue, one of every three black American males born today can expect to go to prison in his lifetime, as can one of every six Latino males—compared to one of every seventeen white males. Racial and ethnic disparities among women are less substantial than among men but remain prevalent.

Something’s gotta change.  If you want to help out, you can financially contribute to The Sentencing Project and/or respond to one of its call to action.

Here’s the HBO Vice special in its entirety.

What’s the Deal with DST?

12 Mar

Since Empire is on as I type, I’ll make this a quickie. (I can’t miss Queen Cookie.) Here’s an entertaining and informative video from John Oliver on Daylight Saving Time. I really enjoy his show Last Week Tonight. It’s laugh-out-loud funny, intelligent, and daring. And of course I love the Brits.

I’m still adjusting to the time change. I do enjoy longer summer days though. Why don’t we just switch to DST all year around? Some countries have actually adopted the measure. Here’s an article supporting permanent DST.

John Oliver on Love

29 Oct

john oliverA black girl has been busy and particularly lazy in the blogging arena.

So I am looking for a new job; I’d like to experience this Mo Money, Mo Problems notion that Puff Daddy and Biggie rapped about in the 90s.  My office is moving moved deeper into Virginia which as a Marylander I am not too pleased with; additional motivation to jump ship. And my already overly-taxing position has been amped up to DEFCON 5 level in preparation for the the big move. I’ve taken up running in the evenings to deal with the stress. Better to exercise than cultivate a heroin habit at the age of 36 right?

My attempts at dating remain unfruitful. The last guy I met up with told me that “I needed to take what I could get.” This after I declined his invite to my home for movie night. I’m tired of negroes inviting themselves over sans provocation. And why John thought he could come over when our initial face-to-face was 24 hours prior is beyond me. Two days in and you already know where I live? No thanks stranger danger. I don’t even know your last name (and I still don’t).

Anywho I thought these snippets from by John Oliver were rather hilarious and telling.

Would you lock that shit down?

Friday Funny: Gran from Angry Boys

3 Aug

Disclaimer: The NSFW video below is childish and un-PC but it makes me laugh.

And we all need that.

Besides it’s Friday and I’d  like to forgo discussing the proverbial black girl trifecta (hair, complexion, and man shortage). Let’s table that for a more depressing Monday or Tuesday, shall we?

I guess I should set up the clip (like I’m an actress in a movie — right?), Gran is a “warden” at a boys group home. The character is played by Australian comedian Chris Lilley in his mockumentary show Angry Boys which airs on HBO. She’s my favorite character.

Did your mum’s heroine heroin habit during pregnancy affect your coordination?
